I have started this entry several times over the last few months only to either get sidetracked or have the blogger app crash but, recently a few things have happened which made me believe now more than ever I should put something like this up.
I have a surname which ends in a vowel - this is of course, no secret to the people who know me.
I never really gave it too much thought when I was growing up and it was only when became a young man I realized it made a difference. I recognized it when I came into contact with people who were for all intents and purposes anglicized, people who were very much part of the ‘old guard’ in the sense their family history went back to the origins of this nation or shortly thereafter.
It was only then I came to see certain doors would be closed to me, certain circles would never be mine to frequent.
It was unsettling to say the least but, deep inside I am a big proponent of all the corny tripe we build up around our image of the United States as a nation. Maybe I am naive that way but, I like to think of it as an optimism which cannot be extinguished. A few weeks back, 60 minutes ran a rather long story on a man who had finally been captured in...
I’m not sure who it was that I was talking about... maybe it was Bernardo Provenzano. Nonetheless the fact that this is something that warrants a 60 minutes piece when they don’t do those kinds of stories on the Triads or Yakuza or the Russian mob is somewhat telling.
Anyway, there were a slew of like drafts in the queue all from around the same time so it has to have been that the app kept crashing.
I don’t need to belabor the point any more than I already have.
